Videoconferencing in the Classroom

Developing interactive videoconferencing
across the curriculum in the UK and around the world

Funding

A note about funding.

Mike is an independent education consultant.

Although Videoconferencing in the Classroom/Global-Leap was originally funded via DfES and Becta, to develop VC content and support schools to access content, the project has been self-funded since April 2005.

In order to continue to support UK schools, International schools, and our Global-Leap  supported content providers, and continue to support and deliver  varied VC opportunities for schools, following the advice of DfES, in April 2006, we invited UK schools to subscribe to the programme, using their e-learning credits.

It is hoped that income raised via subscription will  go some way towards covering costs and will enable the project to be sustainable.

Thank you to all those UK schools who have supported the programme since April 06.

Essential connectivity costs alone cost in the region of £10,000, so as you can see, overheads are quite high, and it is impossible to provide any practical far end support, emergency troubleshooting,  or develop and deliver content to schools without a basic level of funding.

A high proportion of  our VC opportunities are available to subscribing schools "free at the point of use". (we support a range of national museums with on going practical support and equipment loans, including NMM, ROG, NPG, MOL, IWM etc)

However, some of our VC provision (Mexicolore, Active Shakespeare and many others), with no access to education funding, do need to ask for an additional contribution from participating schools, in order to cover costs incurred by presenters or freelance teachers. These costs are generally payable directly to the lesson provider, not to Global-Leap. However GLVCTA aims, as far as possible to cover the whole cost of many of our sponsored sessions by paying the freelancer and covering other costs including studio time and connectivity. For some sessions this GLVCTA sponsorship is limited to covering the cost of the first session to the member school. Schools booking second and subsequent sessions may be asked to contibute towards the cost of those sessions. This to ensure that each subscribing school has equal access to the full range of opportunities. GLVCTA aim to cover the full cost of as many sessions as possible within the funding/budget available.

Details of these, usually nominal costs, are given on the website booking pages for each session.

The costs involved in continuing to develop and deliver a wider range of content and new VC opportunities, we hope to be able to cover from consultancy income.

Please ask about consultancy, project management and equipment loans. Consultancy income will enable us to extend content and continue to arrange and offer innovative VC opportunities to Global-Leap schools.

An outline of consultancy options are below. Please contact Mike to discuss your project ideas and we can see if we can arrange some consultancy and support to meet the curriculum needs of your school.

Annual UK subscription to Global-Leap is £295.00 +VAT . To become a subscribing school click on "Become a Member" and follow the links to register your school on the "Network of schools using videoconferencing".
Global-Leap is a registered retailer for eLearning Credits

Nominal* Full Day - Price on Application

Individual Global-Leap Lessons - Prices vary by provider and are listed on the website and confirmed on your booking form.

Please note: Where providers have employed an actor, presenter or use a specific resource, or there are high call, connectivity or travel charges, these charges will be passed on to the school by the session provider. Sessions may also be subject to cancellation charges if cancelled at short notice. This will be at the discretion of the provider who has incurred the cost.

Some providers (particularly the Museums and Galleries, but not always) do have access to an education budget and therefore are able to absorb these costs and provide the sessions free of charge at the point of use.

The school would still be responsible for all call/ connection costs (including any bridging services and out of hours services) when they are incurred.
